Should science education begin only at school?

Agnieszka Wojtkiewicz from our laboratory believes it should start much earlier.

At MLBKE, we work daily on research involving enzymes — often derived from bacteria — that are applied in modern catalytic processes and biotechnology.

Alongside our scientific work, we are also actively engaged in science communication, from Open Days to participation in events such as the Małopolska Night of Scientists.

One such initiative is the children’s book series “Laura in the World of Bacteria”, created by Agnieszka. The series introduces young children to the world of microbiology in an accessible and engaging way, and includes:

  • “Tasty Bacteria Wonders” – about fermented foods and an introduction to the world of bacteria

  • “The Great Cleaning” – about the role of microorganisms in wastewater treatment

  • “Laboratory” – about bacteria as “factories” producing enzymes and medicines (coming soon)

  • “About Immunity” – what immunity is, what influences it, and whether we need vaccines (coming soon)

  • “Bacteria Within Us” – about the microbiome and how to take care of it (coming soon)

This is an example of how scientific knowledge can be shared in an approachable and inspiring way — even from the earliest years of life.

Have you discovered the series yet?

Small stories that spark big conversations — read together, remembered for years.
