The Department of Biology, Microbiology, research group Prof. Dr. Johann Heider, offers a third-party funded part-time position for a Research Assistant (PhD student)

The position is offered for a period of 3 years, if no former times of qualification must be considered. The starting date is as soon as possible. The position is part-time (50% of regular working hours) with salary and benefits commensurate with a public service position in the state of Hessen, Germany (TV-H E13; equals to around 1400 €/month after taxes, depending on age, qualifications, etc.).

The research group studies the biochemistry of anaerobic microbial metabolism and further current topics of microbial biochemistry. Information on current publications is available at http://www.uni-marburg.de/fb17/fachgebiete/mikrobio/heider/publications.

The tasks include services in teaching (in the field of microbiology) and research on the topic of the cooperative project “structure and function of fumarate-adding glycyl radical enzymes: biochemistry, modeling and applications”. The project is funded by the German and Polish Research Foundations and includes close cooperation with researchers at the Jerzy-Haber Institute of Catalysis and Surface Chemistry, Polish Academy of Sciences, Krakow (Prof. Maciej Szaleniec). The main aim of the project is to elucidate the reaction mechanism of benzylsuccinate synthase and related enzymes and to establish biotechnological applications for these enzymes. Modern methods in molecular biology, biochemistry, spectroscopy and biotechnology will be used. We offer research training in a dynamic international group using various state-of-the-art technologies.

The position is limited to a time period adequate for the completion of a doctoral degree. Ample opportunity will be provided as part of the assigned duties to perform independent scientific research qualifying for the completion of a doctorate. The limitation complies to §2, 1 WissZeitVG.

The successful applicant holds a MSc degree or equivalent in Biology or Chemistry with specialization in microbiology, biochemistry or genetics and has solid practical experiences in biochemical, analytical or molecular biological methods. Experiences in growing microorganisms, anaerobic techniques, working with proteins or biochemical analytics will be useful. Further requirements are a creative and critical mentality, the ability to work in an international team and good English skills. The willingness to further scientific qualification (e.g. a PhD thesis in the field of microbiology) is expected.

For further information, contact Prof. Dr. Johann Heider at +49-6421-2821527 or heider@biologie.uni-marburg.de.

We actively support the professional development of junior researchers, e.g. by the offers of Marburg Research Academy (MARA), the international office, and the Human Resources Office.

We support women and strongly encourage them to apply. In areas where women are underrepresented, female applications will be preferred in case of equal qualifications. Applicants with children are welcome – Philipps University is certified as a family-friendly University. A reduction of working time is possible. Applicants with a disability as described in SGB IX (§2, 3) will be preferred in case of equal qualifications. Application documents should only be supplied as copies, because they will not be sent back after the conclusion of the process. Application and interview costs cannot be refunded.

Application documents are to be submitted as a single pdf-file to galina.bauer@biologie.uni-marburg.de under the reference number fb17-0021-wmz-2020. Deadline is the 29th May 2020.
